1 Revolution and Nation Building
Seven Year War Fallout Revolution and Nation Building

2 Britain was victorious but...
They needed to pay for the war, and needed to keep all their new colonies secure. The rest of Europe now saw Britain as their biggest threat and rival. The sun never set on the British Empire after all. Everyone was gunning for them. They needed to continue strengthening their military to keep themselves, and their colonies secure. Power = Resources = Security = Stability Very Expensive

3 You are king for a day! Who would you tax first to maintain power, resources, security, and stability: The wealthy people of Britain, who help maintain the current British social structure The loyal subjects of Great Britain, who are prospering from the industrial revolution and the colonial empire you have created. British citizens and soldiers who are living on the colonies and helping maintain your colonial empire People who live in the colonies

4 The day continues. Some people living on the colonies don’t like the increase in taxes without proper representation. Taxation representation means you get to vote and have say in who forms the government and spends your tax dollars. In other words you have a say in how your taxes are spent. Should you: Let the people on the colonies form their own government and have a say how their tax dollars are spent. This may keep them happy and strengthen the colony. Don’t let people in the colonies have a say in how their increased tax dollars are spent. They are 13 little colonies and you have an entire empire to run.

5 The days almost over... Things are becoming rather tense in the colonies- especially in Boston! Several mobs have formed around the British legislature in Boston. Several British shoot into a crowd and end up killing 5 civilians. The British Governor promises a full inquiry. Should you: Allow the inquiry to continue Not allow the inquiry to continue

6 The day is over- just one more quick decision
In response to your Tea Tax, (a tax on tea, that you take from your colonies in India and ship throughout your empire), some citizens of Boston destroyed an entire ship full of tea (Lots of $). Should you: Try and negotiate with the colonies because it’s a lot of work to ship tea from india to Britain and then over to America, and maybe it’s worth it to hear their demands. Put an end to colonial trade in Boston, including importing tea and all other business. Not allow any self government (The ability to make decisions for your community) in Massachusetts Both B and C

7 Did you start a revolution with your choices?
If your answers would make the people living on the colonies angry then congratulations- many people on the the Thirteen Colonies see you as a tyrant and will revolt against you. That’s pretty much what happened. And now a cheesy Hollywood movie clip...

8 And a Crash Course...

9 So why talk about the American Revolution in Canadian history?
The French… AGAIN with the French! The American revolutionists (Patriots) had allies in France (The statue of Liberty was actually a gift from France after winning the revolutionary war) There just so happened to be a lot of people with French culture and heritage living in a new colony the British just got in the 7 years war called Canada They didn’t want another war or revolution in the North American continent so Britain had to find a way to keep the people of Lower Canada (what is now Quebec) happy. What impact does this have on Canada?

10 Also important for Canada...
Loyalists Like any conflict there are two sides. Many people in the Thirteen Colonies were loyal to Britain… They were called Loyalists. Once America won the war of Independence with Britain (1776). Loyalists, were angry with Americans, didn’t feel safe and needed a new place to go. It just so happened there was a relatively new British Colony North of the Thirteen Colonies called Canada. There were mostly French people living in Lower Canada (Quebec today) but Upper Canada (Ontario today) was needing a population boost. So they moved there and Toronto became a major city in the New British Colonies of Upper and Lower Canada. How do you think this shaped Canada?
