I can conduct a research project using the scientific method to determine how much of our language is rooted in Greek and Latin.
2
Greek/Latin Research Project
Ask a Question: How much of the language associated with ____ is rooted in Greek or Latin? *Hint: Think about things you are interested in (basketball, Netflix, technology, etc.) or what you want to do when you are older (nurse, construction worker, welder, etc.).Or, you could even concentrate on the vocabulary you are working on in a particular subject. 2 minutes
3
2. Background Information: In 2-4 sentences, explain what you have learned so far about Greek and Latin roots. (How they help you figure out words’ meanings, how you can figure out what a root means, examples, etc.) 2 minutes
4
3. Construct a Hypothesis: I hypothesize that ____% of the language associated with ___________ is rooted in Greek or Latin. 2 minutes
5
4. Procedure: Explain how you will draw a sample of words. Example: Every fifth word on every twentieth page in your book. Brainstorm a list of 20 words associated with your subject. Look up a _____ word list and take every third word. 3 minutes
6
5. Research -- Create a 3 column chart with 20 rows
First: Create your list of 20 words in the first column using the method you described in #4. Second: Use a dictionary (paper or online) to find out if each word comes from Greek or Latin. You’ll need to see what abbreviation the dictionary uses (probably L or GR). If you use electronic resources, you might need to know the word “etymology,” which means history of a word. Hint: *Search “etymology of ____” so that way you just have to change the word each time and fill out the 2nd and 3rd column. Word Greek/Latin (yes/no) If yes, what Greek/Latin word?
7
Research For the words that DO contain a Greek or Latin root, be sure to note what Greek or Latin words they come from. Greek Hupo (under) + Greek Thesis (placing) = Greek hupothesis (foundation) = Latin Hypothesis +hypothesis&safe=active&biw=785&bih=504&so urce=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjO9Zbo2dDRA hVG5yYKHbP0CyoQ_AUIBSgA&dpr=1.3

6. Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion:
What was the outcome? (Hint: to find the percent, divide how many WERE Greek or Latin by the total number of words). What did you learn? How close was your hypothesis? What variables might have affected the outcome? Write 3- 5 sentences. 5 minutes

Communicate Your Results:
Be ready to share what you have learned tomorrow in class!
