Anti-litter & stormwater protection public outreach campaign
2
The Problem: Litter! Litter on sidewalks and on streets gets washed by rain (stormwater) or blown by wind into storm drains where it is carried by stormwater to the nearest river, lake, creek or stream (and eventually the ocean). Water that is polluted by litter is costly to clean for drinking and or recreation. It impacts the health of fish and other aquatic animals, many of which are food sources. Roadside ditches and streets that are polluted by litter are costly to clean. Money spent on litter crews takes away resources for paving and other municipal services. Littered communities have lower property values and higher crime rates. Litter is: Dirty! It is a breeding ground for germs which pollute our waterways and can affects people’s health. A road hazard! It causes accidents when drivers swerve to miss litter and trash on the road as well as to avoid hitting the opportunistic animals feeding on it. Bad for the environment! It wastes public dollars and destroys our natural resources.

Who is littering? Years ago there was an emphasis on the national level to educate the public about the impact that littering has on our environment. Today these messages need to be heard again by a younger generation. Age and maturity are major factors in determining whether someone will be a litterer. The most frequent culprits are teenagers and young adults. This demographic is more than three time more likely to litter than older adults

Raising Awareness! Litter Quitters is spearheading a video competition among the 30 public high schools located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The County has been divided into three watershed sections to include: the North (Locust Fork), the West (Black Warrior/Valley Creek) and the East (Cahaba). The participating schools will compete among the other high schools in their assigned watershed section. Each school will create and submit an anti-litter stormwater protection video that will be available for voting on the Litter Quitters website You Tube Channel from April 10-April 22, Winners will be determined by the number of “likes” received, so students will be encouraged to share their videos on social media. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place videos in each watershed section will be awarded cash prizes and will be featured on ABC33/40’s Talk of Alabama.

Raising Even MORE Awareness!
A :30 second message will be professionally produced featuring students who participated in the Litter Quitters Video Competition. These messages will air during television programs that target not only teens but their parents and grandparents as well. Featuring local teenagers will make an impact on other teens and their friends. The Litter Quitters message will be seen across 23 counties and will also be shared on social media.
