Depicted is the interplay between tumors cells and components of the microenvironment, notably HSC, which influence tumor progression by creating a permissive environment and by perverting the phenotype of tumor cells. Each of these interactions, symbolized by arrows, could be targeted for therapeutic purpose. Epigenetic modulation of the crosstalk between tumor cells and their microenvironment may also open new therapeutic opportunities in liver cancers.
