(A) MR Elastography uses a combination of acoustic waves and phase-contrast MR imaging to provide a quantitative map of the stiffness of tissue, in units of kilopascals (kPa). This transverse MR elastogram of a normal liver shows that the mean stiffness of liver tissue is approximately 2 kPa. Recent data suggest that mean values of greater than 2.5 kPa correlate with the presence of hepatic fibrosis3. (B) This MR elastogram of a patient with biopsy-proven stage 3 fibrosis, shows that the average stiffness of liver tissue is over 5 kPa.
