2 Your Theory Write a theory that gives at least one reason why some countries are more developed than others.

3 What Does Development Mean?
Development usually means the things that lead to the economic wealth and security of a country. The more the developed a country is, the more people will have access to public services like garbage, water, electricity, hospitals, education and police.

4 Human Development Index
The Human Development Index was created by the United Nations to measure the levels of development of the nations of the world. It uses demographic information from three categories. Economic Indicator Per Capita Gross Domestic Product Social Indicators Education Level Literacy Demographic Indicator Life Expectancy

5 Levels of Development Green =More Developed Countries- MDC
Yellow =Developing: making progress Orange =Less Developed:extreme poverty

6 Per Capita GDP Blue =high ($30,000 +)
green =high middle ($15,000-$30,000) purple =low middle ($1,000-$15,000) red = low (less than $1000)

7 Economic Sectors All economies are broken into three parts
1. primary industries: Industries that grow or gather resources a. farming (all forms) b. forestry c. mining d. fishing 2. secondary (manufacturing): any industry that makes something 3. tertiary (services): any job that takes place after a product is made (economists and geographers now recognize a fourth category (quaternary) that includes jobs in research, teaching and information processing)

Select one of the following countries from the pull down list: United States, Russia, Brazil, China, India and Nigeria Click on the economy section. Create and fill out a chart that looks like the one on the following slide. Write three observations and three conclusions from what you see on the chart.

Uganda Write a sentence that explains the connection between the percentage of income that Uganda gets from primary industries and the percentage of people that work in that industry.

15 Geography of Music Response
Write a one page response (two complete paragraphs) that uses information from the previous slides. Main Idea: As a country develops, its economy changes from mainly primary industries, to mainly secondary to mainly service type jobs. As the economy changes, peoples lives change too. Supporting Details: Use information from the following sources -country comparison chart -pie charts about economic sectors -information from article titled “Invent, Invent, Invent” - examples from songs: “Downeaster Alexa”, “Rain on the Scarecrow” and “Allentown” - examples from movies “October Sky”, “Rudy” and “The Perfect Storm” Personal Application: Have you or anyone you know ever had to deal with the loss of a job? Provide a solution of what can you do to avoid having this happen to you? Provide any other examples, experiences that help you relate this lesson to your life.
