Figure 1 BAF Guides Single-Nucleus Formation by Crosslinking the Chromatin Surface During interphase, BAF tethers chromatin fibers to the nuclear periphery through inner nuclear membrane LEM domain proteins. At the onset of mitosis, this connection is disrupted by VRK-1 phosphorylation of BAF. Chromosomes condense to form individual units and are kept apart from one another by a positively charged coating that contains Ki-67. Once chromosome segregation has occurred, BAF rebinds the surface of the chromatin ensemble following PP2A/PP4-mediated dephosphorylation. This surface stiffening and crosslinking prevents the nuclear envelope from enwrapping individual chromosomes. Developmental Cell , DOI: ( /j.devcel ) Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc.
