1 Connecting Catalytic Chemistry to External Particle Conditions via CFD Anthony G. Dixon, Department of Chemical Engineering, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Our objective is the more realistic treatment of catalyst particle internal transport and reaction processes by linking them to the conditions in the fluid flowing past and surrounding the particle. We use computational fluid dynamics to simulate these processes. Single particle models guided development of meshes and methods RANS methods are used to give steady flow and transport in wall segment models with porous particles Large Eddy Simulation is used to resolve transient flow Evaluation of conventional pseudocontinuum models (PCM) shows they cannot give the reaction rates simulated by CFD
