Today’s Goal: Learn to use text features strategically in informational reading.
Outcomes: Describe what is meant by “text features.” Name and identify eight different text features. Analyze a document to find its text features. Apply their knowledge of text features by indicating where to find specific types of info.

Starter #1: Yesterday we started a new unit, another genre of literature, called, “Informational Reading.” What did we learn about informational reading? What is the most important question to ask in informational reading? What is the author’s purpose in writing this piece? Why is it such a big deal to know what the author’s purpose is? 1) To be able to understand what you are reading. 2) To know whether your source is reliable. What do we mean by “reliable”? You can trust it for accuracy.

Starter #1: We discussed four main purposes for informational writing. What are those four main purposes? To Persuade Editorials, ads, commercials, campaign speeches To Inform Newspapers, magazines, books To Entertain True stories (personal narratives), essays To Instruct “How to” articles and books, recipes

Starter #3: Today we are going to examine “text features.” What are text features? Text features are any elements in printed work (including websites) that help the reader gain a better understanding of information. Can you name some text features? Titles, headings, graphics, captions, maps, charts, index, glossary, table of contents Let’s examine text features by using these two sources: * Coach #6 (Text Features) * Discovery Ed video on “Text Features: Finding Information.”
