Kissinger’s Realpolitik & China
Henry Kissinger believed US should base foreign policy on realpolitik (publicly ignore weak nations, negotiate w/ strong) 1971: US ping pong teams invited to China event known as “ping pong diplomacy” Later that year, Nixon visits People’s Republic China Nixon formally recognizes PRC as legitimate govt of China, will support UN resolution giving PRC UN seat & begin trade

Détente with Soviets Nixon announce policy of détente, lessening of tensions with communists Three months after visiting China, Nixon travels to Moscow to meet with the Soviets Nixon & Soviet leader Brezhnev agreed on a new treaty called SALT, which reduced nuclear weapons in each country

Kissinger & Third World Communism
To contain communism in smaller nations, Kissinger favors backing dictators and using CIA resources to support them Ex: Kissinger encourages Nixon to support dictators in Iran, Pakistan and the Philippines To get rid of other 3rd world communists, Kissinger turns to CIA East Timor East Timor gains indp from Portugal, may have communist govt, Kissinger back CIA plan to help Indonesia invade E. Timor Latin America (Operation Condor) Under direction of Kissinger, the CIA aids dictators in Guatemala, Uruguay and Brazil in enhanced torture techniques
