Compounds and Molecules
2
Atoms are seldom found alone in nature.
3
They like to connect with other atoms.
4
Each element is able to make a specific number of connections with other elements. These connections are an element’s combining capacity.
5
How Elements Combine: Rule #1: Often metals combine with nonmetals
6
How Elements Combine: Rule #2: Write the name of the metal first and the name of the nonmetal second. Ex. Combining Sodium and Chlorine Sodium…….Chlorine
7
How Elements Combine: Rule #3: Change the ending of the nonmetal to “ide” Ex. Sodium chloride
8
How Elements Combine: Rule #4: Each atom has its own combining capacity (# of connections) Ex. Sodium has 1 connection Chlorine has 1 connection
9
How Elements Combine: Rule #5: Atoms combine so that each fills its combining capacity
