4 Each element is able to make a specific number of connections with other elements. These connections are an element’s combining capacity.

5 How Elements Combine: Rule #1: Often metals combine with nonmetals

6 How Elements Combine: Rule #2: Write the name of the metal first and the name of the nonmetal second. Ex. Combining Sodium and Chlorine Sodium…….Chlorine

7 How Elements Combine: Rule #3: Change the ending of the nonmetal to “ide” Ex. Sodium chloride

8 How Elements Combine: Rule #4: Each atom has its own combining capacity (# of connections) Ex. Sodium has 1 connection Chlorine has 1 connection

9 How Elements Combine: Rule #5: Atoms combine so that each fills its combining capacity
