The light source is at one focal point of the ellipse. Rays reflected from the ellipse pass through the second focal point, which is also the focal point of the parabola. An intense parallel ray concentrated beam emerges from the parabola and passes through a hole in the ellipse and then to the operating table. A small shield blocks diverging direct rays from the source reaching the operating table.
