2. John was raised as a slave in a house in Mississippi.

3. As a child, John was sold into slavery
As a child, John was sold into slavery. He was sold to a white man by the name of Earl in Mississippi.

4. He lived in a house with several other slaves.

5. One day, John became too exhausted to work and fell
One day, John became too exhausted to work and fell. His master beat him because he was too weak.

6. John couldn’t take it anymore. He prayed to God for freedom.

7. While his master, Earl, was sleep, John ran away in the forest in search of freedom.

8. While running in the forest, he encountered a group of slaves led by Harriet Tubman, the legendary Moses.

9. Because he had nowhere else to go, John went north with the group of runaway slaves.

10. Weeks had passed and suddenly the group of runaways heard galloping horses coming closer. John knew their masters were coming for them, so they ran as fast as they could.

Harriet Tubman usually led with a shotgun in her hand. This terrified John because their was no turning back.

12. They often stopped at several safe houses for food, shelter, and clothing.

13. They traveled several hundreds of miles to reach their destination.

14. After the long journey they made it to the north.
