1 LIGHT how it works

2 Straight Line unless altered by it is what moving in.
HOW LIGHT MOVES: Straight Line unless altered by it is what moving in.

3 When light strikes an object, the light can be reflected, absorbed, transmitted, or refracted.

4

5 Light bounces off a surface at same angle it hits.
REFLECTION Light bounces off a surface at same angle it hits.

6 ABSORPTION Light is taken in by an object, and the energy is transferred from light to heat.

7 Transmission Travels through matter: gases (air), liquids (water) and solid (glass).

8 TRANSMISSION: Terms for mediums
Transparent- allows all light through. Translucent- allows some light through. Opaque- allows no light through.

9 CLEAR=TRANSPARENT SMOKY=TRANSLUCENT SOLID=OPAQUE

10 REFRACTION The change in direction and speed as a wave changes medium
Moving from air to water, light changes angles and speed of travel.

11 Refraction of Light When light rays enter a medium at an angle, the change in speed causes the rays to bend, or change direction.

12 LENSES Alter direction of light. Concave-spreads out.
Convex- brings to focal point.

13 LENSES con’t CONVEX -brings image to focal point.
Image is larger and upside down. ie: eye, microscope, magnifying glass. CONCAVE -spreads image out. -image is smaller and upright. ie: corrective glasses.

14 Lens of the Eye is convex

15 Corrective lenses Far sighted (convex) Near sighted (concave)

16 What is it? Visible Light- only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum

17

18 EM ENERGY: Long wavelengths + Low frequency = LOW ENERGY
Short wavelengths + High frequency = HIGH ENERGY

19

20 VISIBLE LIGHT (part of EM spectrum)

21 Different colors represent different wavelengths.
Red- larger wavelengths, lower frequencies Purple- smaller wavelengths, higher frequencies, Color Order: ROY G BIV red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

22 WHITE LIGHT Mixture of all colors of light
No light reflected makes BLACK

23 MANY COLORS = WHITE

24 The color you see -decided by what is absorbed.
If an object absorbs a color then it’s not seen. All color absorbed = black If object reflects color then it’s seen. All color reflected = white
