3 There Are Two Main Types:
These are all of the things that the characters can struggle with in a story. Internal -- conflict within a person External -- conflict with an outside force What do you think each one looks like?

4 Internal Conflict The character is struggling with something within him- or herself. Can also be called “Self Vs. Self” Example: Lucy is thinking about cheating on a test.

5 External Conflict Character Vs. Character Character Vs. Nature
These are conflicts that happen OUTSIDE of the main character’s control. Three main types: Character Vs. Character Character Vs. Nature Character Vs. Society What do you think each one means?

6 Character Vs. Character
The main character is struggling with another character in the story. Can you name some books where this occurs? Example: John and Jake got in a heated argument.

7 Character Vs. Nature The main character is struggling with an act of nature. Can you name some books where this occurs? Example: Rachel lost her house in a hurricane.

8 Character Vs. Society The main character is struggling with something in society, usually a controversial event or belief. Can you name some books where this occurs? Example: Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus.

9 Directions Conflict: Yesterday in Tanaeka we read about the different types of conflict that Mary encountered not only with herself but also with nature and outside forces. Tanaeka is only one example of a conflict, but soldiers in the military experience many different types of conflict on a daily basis. In order to show them our appreciation for all the conflicts they endure, we are going to participate in Q-100’s BIG THANK YOU.

10 Directions Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements. The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper. Decorate using crayons, pencil, etc. Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only. Do not send cards or photographs. Feel free to include your mailing and address, and you may get a response. Sincerely
