1 The Third Command-ment

2 Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it Holy
Exodus 20:6

3 The original point was to avoid work on Saturday
Exodus 20:9 says: Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work. (the Hebrew word “sabbath” means “rest.”)

4 Later, The Jews used Saturday for their worship service, in their building, called a “synagogue” Luke 4: 16 says that Jesus “went to the synagogue on the Sabbath Day and he stood up to read.”

5 But the Christians … Did not use Saturday for worship.

6 A document from 150 AD says:
We gather to worship on Sunday, because It is the day that Christ rose from the dead.

7 Why don’t we worship on Saturday?
The New Testament does not command us to worship or rest on Saturday. Colossians 2:16 says: Do not let anyone judge you about … a festival or a sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

8 Christ is the substance
This means that now that Christ has come, every day is like a sabbath day for us: Hebrews 4:9 says: So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever enters God’s rest has also ceased from his works, as God did from his. (we are not saved by good works, but by faith)

9 So what does the third commandment mean for us?
Every day is a day of “resting in God” for us. Every day we can gain strength from God’s word, just like we gain strength every day from eating.

10 So Martin Luther writes:
That the meaning of this command for us is that we don’t look down on those times when we could hear God’s Word, But regard God’s Word as special and holy, And gladly hear and learn it.

11 The idea is --- God is with us every day, not just Saturdays;
When we hear God’s Word, It brings us to rest in God’s care Every day of the week.

12 End of Third Commandment
Do you remember ---- Why does God give us so many laws?

13 Which are purposes of God’s laws:
Tells us how to show our love Tells us how to be saved Shows us our sin Shows us the path to a happy life Shows that God wants to take away our fun

14 How did you do: Tells us how to show our love Tells us how to be saved
Shows us our sin Shows us the path to a happy life Shows that God wants to take away our fun

15 God’s Law Shows Sin For by works of the law no human will be justified in His sight, since through the law comes the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20. That’s why we say … We should FEAR and love God ….

16 And … to guide the New Life
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. First John 5:3 That’s why we say … We should fear and LOVE God ….

17 The key verses No human being will be accepted in God’s sight by keeping the law, because through the law comes the knowledge of ___. Romans 3:20 For this is the love of ___, that we keep his commandments. 1 John 5:3.

18 Being in God’s Word Jesus said, “If you continue in my Word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32.
