3.1 Noticing When Texts are One-Sided or Offer Different Sides of an Issue
2
RECAP Persuasive with no reasons or evidence OR arguments
May also see texts that lay out one perspective on a topic while other texts lay out several perspectives and don’t ever make their own claim—WHAT DO WE DO WITH THESE???
3
WHAT TO DO WITH ARTICLES WITH MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES BUT NO CLAIM…
Think…”What are the different arguments involved in this issue? What are the major claims for each side? What are the reasons and evidence for those?
4
ENGAGEMENT With your partner, sort through the texts and find one that seems pretty one-sided and one that lays out different perspectives. Talk to your partner about what you would need to hold onto after reading each of these?
5
SOME QUESTIONS READERS CAN ASK TO ANALYZE ARGUMENTS
What is the claim being made? Is there one central claim? Does this text lay out different perspectives/claims on an issue? What reasons are given to support that claim? What’s the evidence to support those reasons?
