Australian Health System – Quiz time

Question 1 Imagine… you are at walking through Melbourne city centre, after a long day shopping and drinking coffee. You are day dreaming looking forward to going to see a show this evening. You are crossing the road when you suddenly hear a loud horn….oh no it’s a tram, you run to get out of its way, trip and fall. You bang your head and maybe broken your leg, you need an Ambulance. What number will you call? 000 is the emergency number to call should a student require an Ambulance, police or fire. However if they call 911 it re directs to 000. This number should only be used in an emergency, life threatning situation.

Question 2 The Ambulance comes and takes you to the hospital. Your broken leg is put in a cast and you are discharged. When leaving hospital the doctors advises you should visit a GP if you have any worries or questions. Who or what is a GP?

Question 3 You now know a GP is another name for a doctor who works in the community not at the hospital as it is short for General Practitioner. You also know you will find one at a surgery or clinic. You wake up the next morning, your eyes are itchy, your nose is running, you feel short of breath, you keep sneezing. What is wrong with you? Who should you visit to get advice and some medicine to make you feel better?

Question 4 You have been to see the doctor or GP, as you know the hospital is for emergencies, specialists or surgery. She has advised you need some anti-histamine for your hay-fever. She gives you a piece of paper, which she calls a prescription, with the name a drug on it. What should you do with this prescription? Where are you going to go to get your medicines?

Question 5 The lady at the pharmacy, tells you to claim back some of the cost of the anti-histamine from Medibank. She says this will lower your out of pocket. What does out of pocket mean? Who can help you make your claim?
