2 Aims of the session What are the benefits of Maths No Problem? Number Bonds Methods for adding in Year 1 Methods for subtracting in Year 1 Activity time with your child

3 1. What are the benefits of Maths No Problem?
Develops rational rather than learning rules or procedures All children access same learning – some with support, some with opportunities to deepen learning Teaches a range of methods, there is a suitable method for all – builds self confidence Use of CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) to aid visual understanding of numbers.

4 Conceptual understanding vs. rapid recall
“Whilst it is important that children are able to have a quick recall of number facts, it is vital that children first understand the meaning behind the process” Ban Har. Early education gives children the time to understand the process through hands on experiences. Fluency and recall happens in time.

5 2. Number Bonds Start by splitting single numbers
Move on to by partitioning numbers in 10s and 1s Move onto representing one number in different ways As pupils progress in education, their understanding of splitting numbers becomes an essential mental problem- solving strategy.

6 3. What methods are used for addition? Making 10
A method that children will continue to use throughout their ‘Maths No Problem’ journey, and beyond. Making 10 in Year 1 Making 10 in Year 3

7 Have a try! Method – make 10 and count on Use the ten frame and magnetic counters to solve this problem: There were 6 red cars and 7 yellow cars in the car park. How many cars were they altogether? = ____

8 3. What methods are used for addition? Adding the ones

9 4. What methods are used for subtraction?
Subtract from the ones

10 Have a try! Method – subtract from the ones Use the ten frame and magnetic counters to solve this problem: There were 16 strawberries and Curie class came and ate 5. How many strawberries are left? = ____

11 4. What methods are used for subtraction?
Subtract from the tens

12 “It is better to solve one problem 5 ways, than 5 different problems”
Finally… “It is better to solve one problem 5 ways, than 5 different problems” Ban Har, Maths No Problem

13 Time to learn with your child!
