1 Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827)
Composer of the Month Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) Beethoven wrote many pieces of music, including 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 32 piano sonatas and 16 string quartets. At the age of 26 he started to go deaf, although he could still hear music and voices until he was about 40. By the age of 44 he was almost completely deaf, but he still managed to keep composing! He would hold a stick between his teeth and press the other end to the piano, allowing him to feel the different vibrations made by the different notes. When his 9th Symphony (the choral) was first played he was so deaf that he didn’t even know that it had finished until one of the singers turned him around so he could see the audience cheering and clapping! "Don't only practise your art, but force your way into its secrets." Welcome to our Celebration Assembly
