1 Sunlight, Water, & Carbon dioxide
What are the REACTANTS of photosynthesis? What are the PRODUCTS? Mind Stretcher Sunlight, Water, & Carbon dioxide Glucose & Oxygen

2 LET’S REVIEW… What happens during photosynthesis?
Sunlight provides the energy needed to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is released as a waste LET’S REVIEW… What happens during photosynthesis?

3 The Photosynthesis Song

4 Cellular Respiration Notes

5 What is Cellular Respiration?
Organisms take in oxygen and break down sugar molecules releasing ATP energy, carbon dioxide, and water. The release of chemical energy for use by cells.

6 ATP energy, Water, Carbon Dioxide
What are the REACTANTS of Cellular Respiration? What are the PRODUCTS? Cellular Respiration Glucose & Oxygen ATP energy, Water, Carbon Dioxide

7 Who performs Cellular Respiration?
All living things perform cellular respiration! (Even plants!) Inside each cell, the MITOCHONDRIA breakdown glucose molecules to release ATP energy

8 They are OPPOSITE equations!!
The reactants (what a plant needs) of photosynthesis are the products of respiration. The reactants of respiration are the products (what is made) of photosynthesis! The Connection between the two processes… They are OPPOSITE equations!!

9 What happens if your cells don’t have enough oxygen to perform respiration??

10 Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your leg muscles while you were running? When muscle cells can’t get the oxygen needed for cellular respiration, they use the process of fermentation to get energy. One kind of fermentation happens in your muscles and produces lactic acid. The buildup of lactic acid contributes to muscle fatigue and causes a burning sensation. This kind of fermentation also happens in the muscle cells of other animals and in some fungi and bacteria. Another type of fermentation occurs in some types of bacteria and in yeast. Fermentation

11 Fermentation is a way that cells get energy from food without using oxygen.
Causes lactic acid to build up Lactic acid build up causes muscle fatigue and causes a burning sensation Makes LESS energy than Cellular Respiration Fermentation in YEAST is what causes bread to rise! Fermentation- Recap

16 Mind Stretcher 12-14-17 **NO DEVICES!
After observing 1 gummy bear from our lab…describe what happened to it in terms of osmosis. Mind Stretcher **NO DEVICES! There was more water (high concentration) in the cup and it moved into the bear (low concentration)

17 Super Sleuth: Find someone who knows…
What process takes carbon out of the atmosphere? Photosynthesis takes in what gas? Photosynthesis releases what gas? Photosynthesis Carbon Dioxide Oxygen What 3 processes release carbon into the atmosphere? Cellular respiration takes in what gas? Where do plants get their energy? Respiration, Combustion, Decomposition Oxygen The Sun Edit boxes for your lesson….students should have a different student in each box..you can print it out and have students initial the box they do for the student. Continue until all boxes are filled. How do consumers get the carbon they need? Cellular respiration releases what gas? True or False: Animals and plants both perform respiration. Eat other organisms Carbon Dioxide TRUE

18 NO DEVICES Take quiz using pencil
Raise your hand when finished & I will collect your quiz Absolutely no talking. Put your head down or READ while waiting for next task NO DEVICES

19 LAB Day 2

20 Gummy Bear Lab Day 2 Gently roll bear from cup onto flat paper towel
Measure the height & width of your bear FIRST!! Record on data table! Measure mass- Push TARE with wax paper ON electronic scale; Gently roll bear from paper towel onto scale. Record (g) on data table and slide bear back onto paper towel. Record descriptive characteristics in the chart. Answer the analysis questions & turn in.
