Ingredients (on the left) exert forces of change on a treatment target (on the right) through a known or hypothesized mechanism of action. A treatment must contain the defining essential ingredients pertinent to the specific treatment theory and may also contain other active ingredients, each of which contributes to the effects on the treatment target through the specific mechanisms of action. The inactive ingredients, although delivered with the treatment, exert no effects on the treatment target.
