1 Cell phone use is prohibited.
Students: Today is a red light day. Cell phone use is prohibited. This is your warning.

3 12.05 Graphing Ordered Pairs

4 An ordered pair is a pair of numbers that represent the location of a point on a coordinate plane.
The notation for an ordered pair is: P(x , y) P is the name of the point. x is called the x – coordinate. y is called the y – coordinate.

5 A coordinate plane is formed by two intersecting number lines
A coordinate plane is formed by two intersecting number lines. Each number line is called an axis. x y The horizontal axis is called the x – axis. II I The vertical axis is called the y – axis. Origin The spot where the x axis and y axis cross is called the origin. III IV The coordinate plane is divided into 4 regions called quadrants.

6 To graph an ordered pair P(x , y)
Start at the origin, move x spaces left or right, move y spaces up or down, place a point at that spot. Graph A(1 , 3) y Move 1 space right and 3 spaces up. A(1 , 3) x Graph B(– 2 , – 1) B(– 2 , – 1) Move 2 spaces left and 1 space down.

7 Graph the following ordered pairs.
x y Graph C( – 3 , 1) Graph D( 5 , 0) C( – 3 , 1) D( 5 , 0) Graph E(– 1 , – 2) E( – 1 , – 2) Graph F( 1, – 4 ) F( 1 , – 4)

8 Find the coordinates of the following points.
J( – 3 , 0 ) K( 3 , – 3 ) J L( 0 , – 2 ) L M M( – 2 , – 4 ) K

9 Graph the following points.
Try This: Graph the following points. x y A( 2 , 1 ) F B( – 5 , 0 ) C( 1 , – 3 ) A B D( 0 , – 5 ) E( – 4 , – 1 ) E C F( 5 , 4 ) D

10 Try This: Find the coordinates.
x y H( 3 , 2 ) J( – 2 , 0 ) L H K( 2 , – 7 ) J L( 0 , 5 ) M( – 4 , – 8 ) M K
