2 Baseline (flightpath D): Know that animal cells differentiate early on and from then on can only produce a certain type of cell whereas plant cells retain the ability to differentiate throughout their lives. Further (flightpath C): Describe several uses of cloning in science in both animals and plants. Challenge (flightpath B&A): Consider advantages and disadvantages to the use of cloning as a method of propagation.

What is the procedure that scientists use to clone animals Compare this to the method used to clone plants. Explain in terms of differentiation why it is significantly harder to clone animals than plants. 4) What are stem cells?

4 Advantages / disadvantages
Rare species, plant and animal, can be cloned to protect from extinction Crops with special features such as disease resistance can be cloned to produce very large number of identical plants for farmers. Cloning of a persons tissue could produce organs which are not rejected by the body after an operation. Disadvantages Larger risk of inheriting genetic conditions. Higher risk of viral infection Ethical or religious objections
