Hepatic Hepatic levels of hepcidin mRNA and prohepcidin. Expression levels of hepcidin mRNA (A) and prohepcidin (B) were measured by real-time RT-PCR and ELISA, respectively. The relative quantities of hepcidin mRNA in the liver were normalized to β-actin mRNA. The relative protein levels of prohepcidin were normalized by protein concentrations and expressed as ng/mg protein. *P < .05 (8 months) and **P < .01 (14 months) versus the same-age nontransgenic mice (TgM). The numbers in parentheses represent the number of animals examined in each group.
