1 2nd SIDS Roundtable meeting 50th UN Statistics Commission session New York 6th march 2019 Ofa Ketuu
Taking message to the general public with personal messages vs standard graphs?

2 Publications in 2018 The first Quadrennial Report on Sustainable Development was completed and endorsed by Forum Leaders. This will be presented to HLPF 2019 To accompany the regional report, a summary visualisation on progress was developed “Pacific Progress Wheels”. These seek to convert country indicator values into a simple scale from ‘no progress’ to ‘target fully achieved’. One PICT, namely Kiribati, delivered a VNR in Five PICTs are currently preparing their VNRs in 2019.

3 We have focussed on the indicators –since that is
where the data collection occurs. These sit under a target against which we can measure ‘progress’. These wheels are a first attempt to summarise progress.

4 Regional statistics development governance
Committee/Meeting Objectives (s) TORS 1. Forum Economic Ministers Meeting (FEMM) Provide strategic guidance and decision-making body in significant regional statistics development matters, including governance. It has the ability to push significant issues to Pacific Island leaders via the traditional PIFS process. Nil 2. Heads of Planning and Statistics (HOPS) Meeting Provide senior-level strategic oversight, guidance, recommendations and decisions on all statistical matters placed before it. Yes 3. Pacific Statistics Standing Committee (PSSC) Monitor implementation and progress of the TYPSS and other essential statics-related processes; make decision on operational matters and make recommendations to HOPS on strategic issues of importance for statistics development in the Pacific region. PSSC meet in years when there is no HOPS meeting. 4. Pacific Statistics Methods Board (PSMB) A technical body with the role of reviewing technical proposals on methodologies, identifying areas requiring research to identify best practices and making appropriate decisions on technical matters or, in cases where it cannot make a final decision, make recommendations to PSSC and HOPS for further discussion and a decision. 5. Donor and Development Partners Group (DDPG) Meeting Ensure that all relevant donors and development partners were provided with a means to better coordinate their action and resources and provide concrete input into statistic governance in the Pacific. It is not a decision making body but it can make recommendations to PSSC and HOPS on relevant statistical matters and issues. SPC - SDD AS REGIONAL STATISTICS SYSTEM LEADER

5 Work in progress Better tailored questionnaire and survey instruments –such as Disability Surveys and the example of Vanuatu’s ‘Baseline Indicator Survey’ Support to five Pacific countries in the use of data in VNR reporting Development of a regional .stat SDG dashboard –working with OECD to ‘iron out’ difficulties in setting up data structure definitions for the multi-dimensional indicators. (SDD can share the outcome of this work with other SIDS)? The hope is that this will strengthen the presence of P-SIDS data in global publications. Development of a Roadmap for Gender Statistics in the Pacific (UN Women, SPC, UNFPA, ESCAP, ADB). Working with the UN-SIDS to see how we can map and use SDGs indicator to monitor Samoa Pathway performance in the Pacific A few notes for these points above: Better tailored questionnaires, whereby questions link directly to an indicator (for example, Vanuatu’s ‘Baseline Indicator Survey’. The NSO and SDG Taskforce worked through the national development priorities together with Agenda 2030 to develop a national indicator set. This baseline survey will collect data to compute the necessary national indicators) PICTs have shown an increased interest in participating Unrealistic for SIDS to develop this separately (cost and time) Preliminary work done to agree on key gender themes, with small working groups to look at indicator definition and user needs. The Bergen association is early days but could hopefully plug some of the gaps in the indicators for which the custodian agencies have not been able to progress.

6 SDG Dashboard (Pacific Data Hub)
Centralised platform for data dissemination Increased data discoverability, exploration and visualisation Contains a series of thematic dashboards Pacific Community Centre for Ocean Science SDG Dashboard

7 SDG Dashboard (Pacific Data Hub)
Front page: Links to 17 goal pages Includes interactive progress wheel visualisation Goal pages: Broken down into targets and indicators Includes interactive visualisations pulling data from SPC .stat indicator database (SPC is a member of Statistical Information System – Collaboration Community) .stat indicator database based on SDMX - enhances interoperability and improves reporting into global SDG database.
