1 Aim: How do we differentiate between vector and scalar quantities?

2 Definitions of Vectors and Scalars
Scalars are quantities that express magnitude only. Vectors are quantities that describe both magnitude and direction.

3 Identify whether each quantity expresses a vector or scalar
5 m 30 m/s, east 5 mi, north 20 degrees Celsius 256 bytes 4000 calories

4 Distance vs Displacement
Distance = how far an object has traveled Displacement = how far out of place an object is Which is a vector quantity and which is a scalar quantity?

5 Distance vs Displacement Problem 1
Calculate the distance. Calculate the displacement.

6 Distance vs. Displacement Problem 2
Find the distance and displacement of the skier.

7 Distance vs. Displacement Problem 3
Calculate the distance. Calculate the displacement.

8 Distance vs Displacement
Can the distance ever be equal to the displacement? Why or why not? Can the distance ever be less than the displacement?

9 Distance vs Displacement Problem 4
4. What is the displacement of the cross-country team if they begin at the school, run 10 miles and finish back at the school?

10 Distance vs Displacement 5
What is the distance and the displacement of the race car drivers in the Indy 500? (The Indy 500 is a 500 mile race).

11 Speed and Velocity Speed is distance/time. Velocity is displacement/time. Which quantity is the vector quantity and which quantity is the scalar quantity?
