In all activities you need to wear certain clothing or footwear, eg. a team strip, hiking boots, football boots. In some activities you need specialist equipment. - To improve your safety. - To help your performance.
4
EQUIPMENT FOR SAFETY EQUIPMENT TO ENHANCE PERFORMANCE -GUM SHIELD -SHIN PADS -HELMET -WRIST GUARDS -PROTECTIVE PADS -HOCKEY GOALKEEPER ARMOUR -GOALIE GLOVES -SPIKED RUNNING SHOES -GOGGLES -FOOTBALL BOOTS -COURT TRAINERS
5
There are different reasons why you might adapt an activity. Can you come up with 3? - Make easier/more difficult - Make it suit age group - Develop certain skills - Make best use of numbers/ability - Keep activity safe
6
There are 4 ways we can adapt activities to suit our needs. THE PLAYING AREA THE PLAYING AREA THE EQUIPMENT THE EQUIPMENT THE NO. OF PLAYERS THE NO. OF PLAYERS THE RULES THE RULES
7
MAKING THE PLAYING AREA SMALLER eg. cross court basketball, cross pitch football, ½ court badminton. Why might we do this? Less demanding on players fitness. More demanding on players control. eg in Football- 4 v 4 on a small area requires control and effective use of space.
8
MAKING THE PLAYING AREA LARGER Why might we do this? easier for pupils as they have more space for control and errors more demanding on players fitness
9
Adapting equipment is often used for beginners to learn. Come up with an example of this. Smaller - A short handled badminton racket makes it easier to hit the shuttle. - A smaller basketball is easier to hold and control. Larger - A larger ball in softball makes it easier to catch or hit. - A larger goal in football makes it easier to score.
10
Lower - A basketball or netball hoop could be lower so younger children find it easier to score. - A gymnasts beam can be lower to practice moves safely. Lighter - Lighter hockey balls to avoid injury with inexperienced players. - Foam tennis balls, travel slower so are easier to hit.
11
The number of players can be reduced or increased: Write down why you think you might increase or decrease players in a team. Reduced team size - reducing the number of players means that each player will get more touches of the ball e.g. 2v2 basketball. - It also make the game less complicated as there are fewer options to think about. Increasing - Increasing the number of players means you can practice tactics like overloading offence or defence.
12
Rules are often changed to encourage players to perform specific skills. This is also known as a conditioned game. Basketball - 4 points for every lay-up scored. This encourages performer to try and perform the lay-up more often. Football - One touch- this encourage the performer to make quick decisions as well as working on their control of the ball. Come up with another example of changing a rule to encourage players to practice a specific skill.
13
Rules might also be adapted for safety reasons. Rugby - Touch/tag rugby instead of full contact. This means tactics and skills can be practiced while proper tackling is still being learned. Hockey - No lifting the ball. This is a skill that must be performed well to be safe so is often used until players are more skilful.
14
Activities can be adapted/changed to make learning skills easier. Changing the rules is one way to adapt an activity. Name another three ways you can adapt an activity. 1. ______________________ 2. ______________________ 3. ______________________
15
Sometimes your teacher will adapt a formal/written rule to help you learn a skill/technique. 1. Name an activity and a formal/written rule from this activity. 2. Name a skill/technique from this activity which was difficult to learn because of this formal/written rile. 3. Describe how this formal/written rule was adapted 4. Explain how this helped you to learn the skill/technique.
