4. Objective
The purpose of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is to provide students with hands on project based learning opportunities and to learn skills they will need in the work force. There are various levels:
Elementary (Launch)
Middle (Gateway)
High School (Biomedical, Computer Science, Engineering)
This course is called Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS).
Prerequisites include students to have completed or concurrently enrolled with Biology to take this course and score a 4 or 5 on their FSA.
Students will take an End of Course (EOC) Exam in May. Dates TBD. (Not needed to graduate)

Whether discovering new cancer treatments or teaching healthy lifestyle choices to their communities, today’s biomedical science professionals are tackling big challenges to make the world a better place.  
PLTW Biomedical Science students are taking on these same real- world challenges – and they’re doing it before they even graduate from high school. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to problems. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.

7. Pinnacle (Gradebook)
Parents can access their child's grades by following these steps:
1. Go to
2. The user name is the student's ID (This is not the student’s social security number)  Please check your child's schedule to find out the correct Student ID number.
3. The Pin Code is the child's date of birth – this will be typed as year, month, and day (four digits for year, two digits for month, and two digits for day) – no spaces, slashes, dashes, or commas) – for example, if the student’s birthday is February 5, 1992, it would be typed in as
4. Choose the correct school from the School drop down menu: Somerset Academy Middle, Somerset Academy High, or Somerset Academy Arts Conservatory.

9. Online Access
Students have access to an individual PLTW portal where they complete all of their assignments.
Students may bring their own laptops to class to work on assignments, but will need specific programs which they can use through our laptops.

Should a student not have the ability to access the information at home then they may receive it from Ms. Marrero in the form of a paper copy.

11. $35 lab fee - online payment
You may pay in cash to Ms. Marrero before or after school (exact amount only).
This payment gives the students access to the online resources and helps pay for the supplies needed for labs and the equipment including chemicals, beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, graduated cylinders, test tubes, rind stands, Bunsen burners, gloves, aprons, goggles, microscopes, laptop cart, cleaning supplies, etc.
