July, 2016 Discussion Currently HE MU PPDU enables the AP, as part of DL OFDMA, to transmit signals on less than 20MHz, potentially even on just one RU26. This potentially creates a two fold problem to the receiver STA: The required dynamic range in the receiver FFT grows relative to 11ac since at the output of the FFT potentially only one RU will have all the power (as opposed to the power being split evenly across the entire 20MHz) The power estimation in HE STF could potentially deviate by a large value relative to the payload – recall an RU26 contains one or two tones only in HE STF and those tones could be in a null. To minimize power deviations between HE STF and the payload more tones are needed (at least 4-way diversity). Proposal - require a minimum of four RU26 (or equivalently other sized RUs) in each 20MHz. Note the proposed requirement doesn’t limit range as range is limited by the preamble if only 4x26 tones are populated. Ron Porat, Broadcom, et. al.
