1 Welcome to Ms. Samara’s Common Core II Class!

2 Classroom Norms and Expectations
Warm Ups Homework Stamp Sheets Group Work and Roles School Supplies Other Expectations School Policies Food/Drink Emergencies Warm ups occur at the beginning of each day and should be completed in the appropriate block of their warm up sheet. Mr. K will check off warm ups after designated time, usually 10 mins. If you miss a day, write ABSENT in that days box when you return. Warm up sheet should be kept in folder in basket on desk. Warm ups will be checked at the end of each week (and randomly). After graded, past Wus should be kept in binder. Each student will have an individual HSS and it must be kept in your binder at all times. At the beginning of class, I will check hw during Warm ups. HW is graded on completion (100, 50, 0). Late homework is not accepted but all hws are required in your binder. Binder checks will occur randomly throughout the semester. It is important that you bring your binder everyday and keep up with all notes, even if you are absent. Binder checks may be done by teacher or by classmate. Binder checks may or may not be announced as well as the contents looked for. While no specific order is required, binder should be organized in a way that is easy to look through. If I am not quickly able to locate items, they will not count for your binder check. Comment on how groups worked today. You are responsible for the members of your group. At times, you will be given a group evaluation to fill out about your work ethic as well as the other members of your group. Groups will be changed approximately once a unit. Each member will have a role everyday. Most days, you may choose your role by picking the card from your basket. Not every role will be used everyday. Teacher reserves the right to assign roles and it is recommended that you circulate roles each day. More on roles in a second. Be respectful of your classmates and the teacher. Be responsible for your actions and for bringing your materials. Participate in discussions.

5 Introduction to Transformations And Translations
Unit 1 – Day 1 Introduction to Transformations And Translations

6 End Warm Up Matching Card Game
Each of you has been handed a card with a figure plotted on a coordinate plane. Find your classmate who has the “matching” figure. Once you find your “match”, sit together and write a quick description of how your figures have been changed. Be as descriptive as possible! Use the Monday block of the Warm Up sheet on a desk Once all matches have been found, you and your partner will describe your cards to the class. End

7 Transformations Definition: A Transformation is a change in the position, size, or shape of a geometric figure.

8 Think About The Situation

9 Investigation In this lesson, you will learn how coordinates can be used to transform shapes. You will investigate coordinate representation of rigid transformations that provide a way to reposition figures in a plane without changing the shape or the size of the figures.

10 Translation Definition: A Translation (slide) is a transformation that moves points the same distance and in the same direction. A translation in the coordinate plane is described by a vector.

11 Preimage and Image The preimage is the original figure.
Denoted as A The image is the figure after a transformation. Denoted as A’ or “A prime” (This is called Prime Notation)

12 Group Work A translation, or sliding motion, is determined by distance and direction. By looking carefully at a simple shape and its translated image, you can discover patterns relating the coordinates of the shape and the coordinates of its image. Time Keeper: 15 minutes Resource Manager: Problem 2 and 3 Worksheet (1/member)

13 Question 2 v

14 Question 2 v

15 General Rule Compare the transformation rules you developed for Part d of Problem 2 and for Parts c and e of Problem 3. As a group, write a general rule that tells how to take any point (x, y) and find its translated image if the preimage is moved horizontally h units and vertically k units. Compare your rule with other groups and resolve any differences.

16 (x, y)  (x + h, y + k) General Rule Describes a translation of
h horizontal units (+ Right, - Left) k vertical units (+ Up, - Down)

17 Example Write a description and rule for the following translation

18 Vector Notation Vector notation is another way to write rules of translations. A vector is written as h = left/right k = up/down

19 Marching Band Activity
Resource Manager: Grab a worksheet for each group member. Reader: Read instructions out loud to group. Time Keeper: You have _______ minutes

20 Assessment QuickWrite: On a small piece of paper, summarize what you learned today in 2 minutes. You may include pictures or symbols if needed. Post on board when finished.
