Why are places near the Equator ideal for launching space crafts?

Using an atlas shade and label on a world map the Equator, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and all countries and oceans that the Equator goes through. For homework - around the outside of the map students you need to write three to five facts about each of the countries that the Equator crosses.

Watch the first programme on the Equator – Africa up to the point where he travels to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Throughout the programme you need to complete the first few questions on your question sheet. As a class discuss the answers to the questions and the issues facing Gabon e.g. oil reserves, wealth/poverty, oil decline, eco-tourism.
