Does the space we work/live in matter?
Incredible spaces Does the space we work/live in matter?
2
School design School design has changed very little over the last several decades. While certain technologies have been added, the overall structure and space has remained largely the same. What does the picture to the right tell us about classroom design (even now in the 21st century)?
3
Food for thought A recent study published in the journal Building and the Environment, found that classroom design could be attributed to a 25% impact, positive or negative, on a student’s progress over the course of an academic year. The difference between the best- and worst-designed classrooms covered in the study? A full year’s worth of academic progress (Barrett et al).
4
Design matters The study looked at ten different design parameters:
Examine the room around you now? What do you see? The study looked at ten different design parameters: light sound temperature air quality choice flexibility connection complexity color texture (Barrett et al) Infographic

Factors that affect learning
6
Health implications Research shows that sitting for extended periods of time can lead to serious health concerns over time (Levine). Numerous studies have shown a positive correlation between brief physical movement in the classroom and learning outcomes (achievement, attitudes, performance) (CDC) What can be done to change this? (Berkowitz and Clark)
7
Now What? You and a team will be asked to consider an area of this school that would benefit from a complete redesign. The new redesign will consider the available space, its best use, ergonomic design, health and well-being effects, and cost. Here we go!
