1 The Leaders Law of Influence Day#1
Intro to Leadership CS Lesson 401

2 Entry Task What are you grateful for today?
Learning Target: I will be able to explain and recite the leaders law of influence. What are you grateful for today? When people say they are #livingmybestlife are they? Why is it difficult to “live your best life? Can we do anything about it? Give students time to respond to each question. Using a strategy of your choice- (check out our list) have students share their responses.

3 Apologize to someone today
Apologize to someone today. Remember that an apology is not an admission of guilt or wrongdoing. It’s an acknowledgement that you’re willing to do better next time. “The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have.” - Norman Vincent Peale

4 The Pinkie Wiggle Go through the following Leaders Law of Influence procedure with students. Tell students to raise their right fist and then to raise their right pinkie and wiggle it. Say, “Did you know that you just disrupted every atom in the room?” Say, “There are atoms bouncing off the walls right now because you all just wiggled your pinkies!” Say, “As you are wrapping your minds around that concept, I want to introduce you to a man named King Duncan, who wrote a book called The Amazing Law of Influence – it’s where we got the idea for the Leaders Law of Influence that we are talking about today!”

5 Butterfly Effect Butterfly Effect
Say, “In his book he talks of a man named Dr. Edward Lorenz who came up with the ‘Butterfly Effect.’ What Dr. Lorenz discovered is that it was possible for a butterfly flapping its wings in Malibu, California to set in effect a bunch of meteorological events that could produce a monsoon in Malaysia months later! He figured out that was possible.” Say, “Now if a butterfly could do that, imagine what a bald eagle might do, imagine what you might do, and now wrap your mind around an even more powerful concept: The Leaders Law of Influence, which states ‘Every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility for mutual change. Every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility that the whole world will change.’”

6 The Five Second Sacrifice
*Read: The Five Second Sacrifice* Debrief the story by asking the following questions:Reading Questions Hand out What is the point of this story? Can you connect with this story in anyway? If so how? Who will gain and who will lose from a school that focuses on doing little acts of kindness like this? How might your actions have influenced someone today in a positive or negative way? How has someone else’s actions influenced you today in a positive or negative way? What do you think would happen if we knew the positive or negative impact that every one of our actions had on other people throughout the day? Get multiple responses for each of these questions and push students to think about the power of the little things we do or don’t do each day that positively or negatively impact others.

7 Leaders Law of Influence
With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility for mutual change. With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility that the whole world will change. Hand out the Leaders Law of Influence to the class. Project Image: The Leaders Law of Influence* Now have students start to practice reciting the Law out loud as a class, and then with partners, so that everyone has it memorized. Give students about 5-7 minutes to practice. Teacher Note: You can try this as a choral reading and act like you are conducting a band or orchestra from the front. Start the beginning phrase all together and then point at a student to finish the second part of the statement. Say, “With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility for mutual change. With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility that the whole world will change.” Say, “For the next couple of days we will be watching examples of The Leaders Law of Influence and talking about how we saw influence playing out within the clips, how influence worked within the clips, and what difference it made or possibly will make.” Say, “While you are watching this next video, there will be some obvious things that are happening as well as some less obvious in connection to influence. See if you can notice the different things that are happening in connection with The Leaders Law of Influence.”

8 What specific examples of influence did you notice in the video?
Does everyone think the same way as the construction worker? Why or why not? What do you think of the line, “It might not be probable, but it is possible”? Why is it important that we live in the possible and not always in the probable? Have you seen examples of a chain reaction of kindness that lead to a boomerang effect in your own life? Explain. L I F E V S T Additional Discussion: After discussing, ask students if they caught a couple of the less obvious examples of influence: Did you notice that while the boy was helping the older lady across the street, his friends were following him in the background and watching everything that he did? Did you notice that even though the younger lady who was helped by the older lady who crossed the street did not smile, she still kept the chain of kindness going, which shows that no act of kindness is ever wasted? Did you see that the hot dog vendor standing in front of the man who was sitting outside the music store, probably for awhile, jumped in with kindness only when the man first bought an extra hot dog for him? Did you understand why the girl bought flowers for the older lady that was sitting in the outdoor restaurant? Answer: Because she was looking over sadly at the table that had some young girls interacting with their Mom and/or Grandma. Did you notice why the old lady who received the flowers gave the $100 tip for the waitress? Answer: The waitress was being yelled at by her manager in the background.

11 Final Thoughts The Leaders Law of Influence states,
‘With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility for mutual change. With every person’s life we touch, there is the possibility that the whole world will change.’ Who will you change today? Who will change you? What do you want to use your influence for today?
