2. Semicolon review
Semicolons connect two independent clauses without a coordinating conjunction, or with a conjunctive adverb.
Jay wears a size 16 shoe; he often needs his shoes custom-made.
Jay wears a size 16 shoe; therefore, he often needs his shoes custom-made.
Use a semicolon when two clauses are related, and when you want to connect them together as part of the same idea.
Semicolons are also used in lists of items which already contain commas.
We traveled to Paris, France; London, England; Brussels, Belgium, and Rome, Italy.

3. Colons
Colons are only used after a statement that is complete. Never use a colon after a sentence fragment. Use colons to:
Introduce a list of items.
The bookstore specializes in three subjects: art, music, and theater.
Between independent clauses when the second explains the first.
I have very little time to learn the language: my new job starts in two week.
For emphasis.
After three long weeks, the jury reached its verdict: Guilty.

4. Colons Place the colon in the correct location:
You only have one choice leave now while you can.
You only have one choice: leave now while you can.
Mr. Hobbs needed three items from the storage locker his tool box, his scrap wood, and the keys to his mother’s old house.
