Pre-Lab Identify the I.V. and D.V. Write a problem question
Write a hypothesis. Make a list of the materials used. Must complete this BEFORE you start the lab.

Materials and Info. V = l*w*h (Measure Precisely!!!)
Meter stick, scale, and 5 different sized blocks of the same type of wood. Equation for Volume: (Multiply length x’s width x’s height) Use centimeters (cm) V = l*w*h (Measure Precisely!!!) Equation for Density: (Divide mass (in grams) by volume (in cm3)) Density = mass (D = m) volume V

Helpful Tips The wood blocks are lettered to help you stay organized, but pay attention to the VARIABLES (l, w, and h) ***ROUND all densities (ONLY Density) to the hundredths place. (ex .434 = .43 ) two number to the right of the decimal.

*Lab Reports: 1.) All of your groups lab reports must be stapled together. Place the neatest one on top to be graded. 2.) Everyone in your group MUST have completed all of the calculations neatly. 3.) Calculations Must be done in DUFAS for credit. 4.) All questions MUST be neatly completed as well.

What happens to the mass, volume and density of a loaf of bread when you squeeze it? Explain how all three variables are affected. a. When you squeeze the bread, you squeeze out some of the air, reducing its volume while maintaining the same mass. (remember, we can’t create or destroy matter/mass) b. The density will increase! This is due to the loaf of bread being squeezed together. There is now more matter in a given space.

What happened to the density of the wood as the size of the wood decreased? Why do you think that happened? Explain your answer. The density of the wood stayed the same because it was the same piece of wood, just physically cut up into different pieces. It had the same amount of wood molecules in a given area. Remember, density is a ratio of mass to volume!
