1 Encounters With Jesus

2 INTRODUCTION THE ROUTE - Easier but unusual for Jewish travelers
THE WOMAN - Completely out of the ordinary for a Jewish man to speak to a woman in public THE CONVERSATION - Jesus approached her with patience and compassion

3 THE MESSIAH Literally “anointed” and almost always translated as “Christ” in the New Testament. Three Old Testament offices required anointing - Priest, Kings and Prophets Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit - Luke 4:17-21; Acts 10:38

4 THE MESSIAH Luke 4:17–21 (NASB95) 17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

5 THE MESSIAH Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit - Luke 4:17-21; Acts 10:38 With the Samaritan woman we see each aspect of this Messianic Role Jesus patiently Convicted her of her Need

6 THE GIVER OF LIFE The Gift of God: Some source of physical blessings?
The Torah? Eternal Life!

7 THE GIVER OF LIFE Living Water:
“Living water” is a phrase drawn from the prophets describing God’s life giving provision - Ex 15:22-27; Psa 36:8,9 In the prophets, Israel is portrayed as having turned away from the living water of God to the idol - Jer 2:13 Water imagery was employed in the sense of cleansing and returning to fellowship with God - Is 1:16-18; Ezek 36:25-27

8 THE WAY OF ACESS The religion of Christ was to be one characterized by unimpeded access to God Both Gerizim and Jerusalem represented something that stood between the worshipper and the object of his worship Jesus condemned the corruption of God’s law that had institutionalized faith and created the Judaism of the day

9 THE WAY OF ACESS Jesus contrasted the present order with a new and different way “In spirit” - The word spirit, here, stands opposed to rites and ceremonies, and to the pomp of external worship. “In truth” - Not through the medium of shadows and types, not by means of sacrifices and bloody offerings,

10 APPLICATION In this “Spirit and Truth” statement we find both common ground and the point of disagreement between the church and the denomination We are seeking God - we must not be so quick to judge motives. Our point of contention is anything between us and access to God
