A is the lead umpire They start as shown in the set up. Reason for this position is so they can see the ‘meeting’ of the taker and the goalie. This usually happens around the ‘shaded blue’ area…..G see diagram…. in front of goal. If the umpire stands near the backline they are not in the best position to see this. B stands as shown and is looking for any foul on the far side of the circle from A. B also looks to see if the WHOLE ball goes over the goal line in the 8 seconds. B does not ever use their whistle. Communicates with A if needed with signal, nod/shake of head or verbally. Timekeeper C faces away from the goal/circle so they cannot see the action! They should stand in the area behind A so A can hear the whistle clearly. A checks with C that they are ready, then blows the whistle to start the shoot out when they are happy both players are ready. A then walks in following the play from behind…..see yellow arrow….. keeping out of the way and not going ahead or square with play. C starts the time immediately they hear this whistle. C blows the whistle as loud as they can when the 8 seconds is up. Matches are often noisy with excited crowds!! Reason C does not start the shoot out is because they are not looking or in control of the players. A will blow whistle for a goal or any foul. Sometimes this whistle can be close to the 8 seconds whistle so listen carefully! Goal, Re take, PS, FH defence, 16 or time up are the only outcomes from Shoot Outs If the ball goes over the backline or sideline the shoot out is over. Remember the goalie is allowed put the ball over the back line intentionally, only time they are allowed this action without being penalised.

Intentional foul by goalie is a PS.
Unintentional foul by goalie is a Retake. Guideline…… If it would be a corner in a match for a foul by the goalie……Retake If it would be a PS in a match for a foul by the goalie……PS Remember any of the team mates can take the PS….except if red card! Remember to switch order of teams if it goes to sudden death. Remember to keep the score.
