4 Knowledge Checklist 7. What is meant by “gender inequality”?
8. What are the challenges faced by women as a result of gender inequality? 9. Suggest reasons why female empowerment is important in the development process. 10. Explain the low levels of female participation in education in many LICs. 11. Identify and explain the factors that limit female access to reproductive health services in LICs. 5 Exam Tips Correct use of terminology will help your answers to be more concise and authoritative. Inequalities in spatial patterns of human rights violations are explained by a range of economic, social, political and environmental factors. You should be able to demonstrate how these factors are important, often in combination. In the analysis of statistical maps and diagrams, you should be able to describe and explain the patterns and trends shown, and evaluate the effectiveness of the technique used to represent the data. You should understand that the relationship between patterns of gender inequality and levels of development are explained by economic, social, political and environmental factors and that these factors are interrelated.

6 Exam Tips 5. You should be prepared to evaluate the relative importance of the different factors that contribute to violation of the various human rights e.g. forced labour; MMR and capital punishment as a minimum. 6. Case studies are important in the more extended responses. The application of statistical and place-specific detail of your chosen areas or countries is useful in supporting discussion and in reinforcing arguments.
