Graphing on the Coordinate Plane
2
Coordinate Plane The plane formed when 2 perpendicular number lines intersect at their zero points 5 4 3 2 1 -1 -4 -5 -1 -3 -2 1 2 3 4 5 -2 -3 -4 -5
3
Coordinate Plane The plane formed when 2 perpendicular number lines intersect at their zero points The vertical line is called the y-axis The horizontal line is called the x-axis Where the lines intersect is called “the origin”
4
- Coordinate Plane + X values to the right of the origin are positive
X values to the left of the origin are negative - +
5
- Coordinate Plane + y values above the origin are positive
y values below the origin are negative + -
6
I II IV III Coordinate Plane
The x and y axis divide the coordinate plane into 4 regions called “quadrants” x is negative, y is positive II I x is positive, y is positive x is negative, y is negative III IV x is positive, y is negative
7
Ordered Pair A point on the coordinate plane consists of 2 values – the first is the x-coordinate, the second is the y-coordinate y Starting at the origin, the point is 2 spaces to the right (2,3) x = +2 x Then the point is 3 spaces up y = +3
8
Ordered Pair (-4,2) x = - 4 y = +2
A point on the coordinate plane consists of 2 values – the first is the x-coordinate, the second is the y-coordinate y Starting at the origin, the point is 4 spaces to the left (-4,2) x = - 4 x Then the point is 2 spaces up y = +2
9
Name the Ordered Pair y (-1,3) (4,2) x (-4,-3) (3,-4)
10
Name the Ordered Pair y (0,2) (4,0) (-4,0) x (0,-2)
11
Graph the Ordered Pair y (3,1) (-3,5) x (-1,3) (4,-1)
12
Graph the Ordered Pair y (5,0) (0,4) x (-3,0) (0,-1)
