Rate of Change The rate of change is the change in y-values over the change in x-values.
2
Example 1 Determine the rate of change and start value from the input-output table. Choose two ordered pairs. Calculate the rate of change. Start Value: 4
3
Example 2 The rate of change in the table is −2. Find the start value.
Rewrite the table to include x-coordinates to 0. Work backwards. The start value is 10.
4
Example 3 Find the start value and the rate of change for the input-
output table. Select two pairs of numbers. Calculate the rate of change. Rate of Change: Add 4
5
Example 3 (continued) Find the start value and the rate of change for the input-output table. Work forwards from x = −2 Start Value is −1
6
Then write an equation in y = mx + b form.
7
Exit Problems Determine the rate of change, start value, and equation for each table. x y −5 1 2 7 3 13 4 19 x y −1 22 1 14 3 6 −6 7 −10
