Joining two independent clauses this way implies that the two clauses are related and/or equal, or perhaps that one restates the other. (OWL at Purdue) Examples: “There are 1.1 million Spanish-surnamed registered voters in California; 85 percent are Democrats” (Chavez 5). “You cannot do away with an entire people; you cannot stamp out a people’s cause” (Chavez 6).
