1 Annual meeting 22-24h Nov 2010, Dunkeld
SAGES Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment & Society Annual meeting 22-24h Nov 2010, Dunkeld Theme 4 (Society) Mark Rounsevell, University of Edinburgh Ioan Fazey, University of St Andrews

2 Identified research challenges
Vulnerability & adaptation to environmental change including health Climate management and energy policy including individual and social behaviours Ecosystem services and their beneficiaries and environmental governance Land use, landscapes and soils

3 Some new research activities
EU Framework 7 proposal on tipping points in socio-ecological systems (Dundee and Edinburgh) Human ecodynamics project (St Andrews and Edinburgh) MRC proposal on vulnerability and resilience to heat waves in older people (Glasgow and Edinburgh)

4 Questions to focus on Can we model human behaviour at a global scale?
role in global ecosystem models role in global climate models Can we better understand human adaptation processes using empirical evidence from change in the past? role in developing understanding of human processes role in supporting model of human behaviour How can we use workshops, publications and grant applications within SAGES to tackle these research questions?

5 Research workshops Workshop 1 on modelling human behaviour
Workshop 2 on understanding adaptation and resilience Workshop 3 on using the empirical evidence to support model development for human systems Concept papers (published) arising from each workshop Leading to grant applications for implementation of research plan Process could feed into the evolving Millennium Assessment for Human Behaviour (MAHB)
