Tener que … Use tener + que + an infinitive to say that you have to do something. Por ejemplo… 1.I have to study for the Spanish quiz. Tengo que estudiar para la prueba. 2. She has to go to the bakery today. Ella tiene que ir a la panadería hoy. 3. We have to wear a dress to the wedding. Tenemos que llevar un vestido a la boda.

Tener ganas de… Use tener ganas de to talk about something you feel like doing. Tener + ganas + de + an infinitive. 1.I feel like eating something. Tengo ganas de comer algo. 2. Do you feel like going to the movies? ¿Tienes ganas de ir al cine?

Tener Idioms Tener idioms do not directly translate, but we use tener for the expressions! That's because tener, the verb meaning "to have" in the sense of "to possess is frequently used in idioms to refer to a wide range of emotions and other states of being. While we may say in English that you are hungry or a person is thirsty, in Spanish we say the equivalent of you have hunger or someone has thirst.
