CHEMICAL EQUATIONS
2
WHAT ARE CHEMICAL EQUATIONS?
A CHEMICAL EQUATION IS USED TO SHOW THE CHANGES THAT TAKE PLACE DURING A CHEMICAL REACTION REACTANT + REACTANT = PRODUCT
3
WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT? CHEMICAL EQUATIONS ARE IMPORTANT WHY IDENTIFYING THE REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS IN A CHEMICAL REACTION. CHEMICAL EQUATIONS ARE ALSO NEEDED TO BALANCE EQUATIONS; WHICH IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT PART OF CREATING AND ASSESSING CHEMICAL REACTIONS.
4
IMPORTANT TERMS USED IN CHEMICAL EQUATIONS:
CHEMICAL REACTION – THE CHEMICAL CHANGES THAT OCCUR REACTANTS – THE SUBSTANCES THAT IN REACT IN THE CHEMICAL CHANGE PRODUCTS – THE SUBSTANCES FORMED AT THE END OF THE REACTION
5
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHEMICAL EQUATIONS:
CHEMICAL EQUATIONS CAN BE WRITTEN IN ONE OF TWO WAYS… WORD EQUATION: DESCRIBING THE REACTION USING THE FULL NAME SKELETAL EQUATION: DESCRIBING THE REACTION USING THE SYMBOLS
6
HOW DO I WRITE AN EQUATION?
1) IDENTIFY THE REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS 2) PLACE THE REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS ON THEIR CORRECT SIDES (REACTANTS GO ON THE LEFT AND PRODUCTS GO ON THE RIGHT) ** DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE WRITING A SKELETAL OR WORD EQUATION YOU MAY NEED TO BALANCE IT
