5th Grade AIM Diane Moore, GT Specialist for Chandler Elementary Welcome! Fifth Grade: Students examine the elements of conflict and change through a survey of the American Civil War. They are challenged to think critically and creatively, recognize connections between the past and present. STEM PBL: “Something Fishy.” The 5th grade AIM students will meet every Thursday. We will begin AIM the second week of school. You can send supplies their first AIM class. ext. 5234 Our Humanities unit of study is Conflict and Change. We will be investigating the United States during this historical time to learn how systems of geography, government, economics, and culture interact. Students will determine cause and effect relationships by making connections between events of this time period. The main goals of the unit are listed below. Each student will have the opportunity to research, contribute to discussions, and present various projects throughout the year.  Objectives To develop understanding of the concept of cause and effect and its relationship to events and eras in history To develop reasoning skills with application to social studies To develop interpersonal and social group process skills To develop skills in historical analysis and primary source interpretation To develop understanding of causes of the Civil War, the major events and influential individuals of the period, and the reasons for the Union victory. Supply List: 1 composition notebook Clorox wipes Maker space donations: Toilet paper rolls cardboard  Sponge paint brushes (cheapest ones) Duct tape Double sided tape Model  magic Velcro . Science focus: Something Fishy is a PBL (Problem Based Learning) unit in ecology and the impact of pollution on ecosystems by means of an examination of an aquatic ecosystem. It allows significant science content knowledge in the course of solving an interdisciplinary, real-world problem. IT requires students to analyze the problem situation to discover and select information that applies to the problem solution and to obtain that information in a variety of ways. STEAM :Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Math Guidelines The engineering design process is the driver for finding solutions in the identified problem. Engaging, inquiry based instructional approaches are used and research is incorporated. Students work in teams to find solutions, and multiple right solutions are possible. The definition of technology is anything created by humans in response to a need or want.
