Southern population & plantations expands into the deep south & west:
CAUSE EFFECT/CAUSE In colonial times, the Southern economy was largely based upon farming cash crops with most settlements along the Atlantic coast. 1. 2. Southern population & plantations expands into the deep south & west: After American Revolution demand for cotton increases - English textile mills Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana - New England mills Tobacco, rice, indigo 3. Eli Whitney invents the Cotton Gin in 1793 which quickly & easily cleans cotton: 4. More slave labor becomes necessary to increase profits. Encourages farmers to grow more cotton - Production increases by 50 times Slave trade becomes a major business Increase demand for slaves - Profits increase
