Making school’s safer with simple solutions

2 Safety Programs Each School System should have a written Safety Manual. Each School should also have a director of safety that develops safety guidelines along with school administration. Chapter11- School Safety

3 Safety Programs Teachers are often first responders in school emergency situations. It is important to have well trained teachers to deal with these situations. 4 Traffic and Transportation
Control of traffic flow is the responsibility of school personal to keep everyone on campus safe. The use of speed bumps and traffic monitors can help to eliminate some common problems. Chapter11- School Safety

5 Bus Transportation Buses provide a safer means of transportation than automobiles do. Buses can also carry many more students in a safer way. Safety instruction for bus riders and teacher is required at least twice a year. Chapter11- School Safety

6 Walking to School Some schools establish route plans for students who walk to school. They do this to try and plan the safest traffic free route for children to walk to school. It is important to educate children about street safety before they walk to school alone. Chapter11- School Safety

7 Latchkey Children As many as 10 million children go home to an empty house from school each day. These children are known as latchkey children. Children should be informed about important issue before being left alone in a home. Chapter11- School Safety

8 Latchkey Children Make sure they know how to call 911, and other numbers in case of an emergency. Make sure they know never to tell anyone they are home alone. Make sure they do not answer the door to strangers. Tell them the rules about homework, snacks, and using appliances when you are not home. Ask a trusted neighbor to check on the child. Buildings, Grounds, and Equipments Safety in these areas are the responsibility of the maintenance staff. Inspections should be made periodically of all equipment and buildings. There are many different codes and requirements that must be met in different areas, be sure to check to see if your school facilities meet the requirements. Chapter11- School Safety

Playgrounds Falls are the most common injury on playground equipment. Height and placement of equipment are two important factors that MUST be considered when purchasing equipment. Chapter11- School Safety

Classroom Safety The teacher needs to be trained to use all the equipment available in his or her classroom. Pupils also need to be properly trained and familiarized before they are allow to use equipment in the classroom. This applies to specific instruction areas. Chapter11- School Safety

12 Safety with Science Physical and Chemical hazards are present when using science equipment. Students need to be made aware of all hazards including glass, chemicals, and flammable materials. Protective gear is necessary in the classroom and should be used properly. Chapter11- School Safety

13 Safety with Industrial Arts
Detailed Instruction and Close supervision are essential to a safe program. Making sure that equipment is maintained, tools are properly stored, and that wastes are removed is the obligation of the teacher and his students. Chapter11- School Safety

14 Safety in Physical Education
The most prone to accidents in a school/classroom setting. The instructor must properly supervise students in order to reduce injuries. The teachers must take special care when instructing students on how to properly use equipment and perform techniques. Chapter11- School Safety

17 Legal Liability Negligence is defined as the failure to conduct oneself in conformity with standards established by law for the protection of others against risk or injury. Means that a teacher or administrator has failed to as as a reasonably prudent person would have acted in the situation. Chapter11- School Safety

18 Liability Protection All personal should be familiar with liability laws. Teachers should have some training in First-Aid. Teachers should: inform students of dangers supervise their activities make sure equipment is safe give instruction if proper use of equipment Chapter11- School Safety

19 Liability Protection School Administrators should:
Assign only qualified personnel to perform services. Closely supervise new personnel to ensure their familiarity with the schools equipment and policies. Have an awareness of curricular and extracurricular activities. Provide training for school personnel regarding emergency procedures. Chapter11- School Safety

20 Medical Records Teachers and coaches should know the health status and history of each child under supervision. Medical Records can be helpful resources for identifying abnormalities that may affect the child's abilities. Chapter11- School Safety

21 Medical Records Public law states that every child regardless of their handicap shall have access to all school programs and activities. Medical Records can give teachers a better understanding of student’s handicaps. Chapter11- School Safety

22 Accident Reports Accident Reports serve two functions:
They protect the school and its employees in liability suits involving student injury They can be used to identify hazards in the school environment The school should have a form to fill out that contains all questions that must be answered in order to write a proper report Chapter11- School Safety

23 The Athletic Program Many coaches often lack the training necessary in injury prevention and medical care. All Athletes should have a physical exam before the start of each season. Trainers are an important part of a safe athletic program but it is essential to have trained coaches who can deal with emergency situations. Chapter11- School Safety

24 School Security Violence and property damage are increasing in schools across the nation. Suburban areas and city schools experience school security problems. School design is changing due to the increase in vandalism and property damage. Chapter11- School Safety

25 School Security Many schools cannot afford adequate insurance to cover the effects of vandalism and theft. Much of the vandalism and theft occurs during the school day. Many schools are investing in security guards who roam the hallways, or parent volunteers who patrol the school area. Chapter11- School Safety

26 School Disaster Plan Each school must prepare and practice an emergency plan that will handle the disasters in that particular area. Each room should have a disaster plan posted on the wall, and teachers should practice it often. Preparedness is key to having a chaos free exit upon the event of an emergency. 27 Summary Teachers and Administrators, as well as other school personnel are responsible for school safety. Teachers should learn basic First-Aid skills because they are often the first responder to an emergency in school. The safety of the building and its facilities is the responsibility of the school and maintenance personnel. Chapter11- School Safety

28 Summary Teachers should be familiar with all equipment in the classroom and should be able to give instruction on how to use it properly. Administrators should be sure to hire qualified personnel who understand the policies and procedures of the school. Athletic Programs need to have trained coaches. Crime is growing in schools.
