1 What makes a place Liveable?
4 May, 2019 LI: Students will examine a variety of locations and decide the criteria that makes a place liveable. Students explore their local community and decide how liveable their local community is in terms of criteria. Students create a virtual community that has high liveability factors.

Show Youtube clip: Monocle Magazine conducts a Quality of Life survey annually. The purpose of this survey is to find out what makes a city ‘a good place to live in’. Zurich Melbourne Tokyo Sydney Copenhagen Helsinki Berlin Madrid Dubai Honolulu MINI TASK 1: Working with a partner, decide which cities are the top 3 most liveable cities in the world. (1 being the best). Create a list of reasons for your choices. Be prepared to present this information to the class. 10 of the top 25 cities are listed ABOVE

6 Glossary: Liveability: Quality of life (QOL):
Liveability: The features of a place that improve the quality of life. (Environment, services, infrastructure, transport etc) Quality of life: The condition of a human life. (Excellent, good or poor) Residing in a liveable area improves QOL.

7 Liveability MINI TASK 2: Brainstorm factors that makes a place liveable from your presentation and the presentations of your peers. Divide these factors into the headings on the next slide. Having reasonable access to these factors makes a place more liveable.

8 Environmental Social Cultural Economic Value of property
Cleanliness, dust, pollution, noise, air and water quality, aesthetics Social personal security, traffic safety, community identity and pride, neighbourliness Cultural historic structures, mature trees, traditional architectural styles, streetscapes Economic Value of property Infrastructure streets, public transport, health, shopping centres, schools, religious institutions, parks and sporting facilities, other public facilities.

9 Liveability MINI TASK 3: Complete the liveability survey. Give a score for your local community. Graph your results using Numbers or excel.

10 Liveability MINI TASK 4: Use Scribble Maps online to digitally annotate a Google map of the Gawler community. Add images of the factors that make Gawler a liveable place.

11 Liveability TASK 5: What liveability factors would the following groups of people consider important? Teenagers? Parents with young children? Elderly couples? You must list at least 4 factors under each heading.

12 Liveability ASSESSMENT TASK 6:
Use your own knowledge and the survey to create a (flyer sway, Keynote, iMovie, Powerpoint) advertising the features of your suburb as a ‘liveable’ area. You need to choose a target audience and ensure you are including the factors. Refer back to the table on Slide 8 to help you.

13 Liveability ASSESSMENT TASK 7:
Create a virtual community that has high liveability factors. Make sure you include a range of factors. Things you need to consider in your town include: Location- urban or rural Resources- water, electricity, gas, sanitation Communications- roads, phone, internet, public transport and shipping. Services- health, education, housing, entertainment, cleanliness, safety, police, Government- performance policy – environment, employment, crime rates. Geography-climate, terrain, including rivers and beaches, location
