2 Purpose Method Theoretical frame Contribution of my research
Agenda Purpose Method Theoretical frame Contribution of my research ERES 2009

3 1. Purpose The overall aim of my research is to:
Investigate the organizational structure of the real estate industry from a gender perspective. (As the work goes along I assume that I will include the intersectionality perspective, so far intersectionality i.e. gender) ERES 2009

4 2. Method Three sub studies Sub study 1 In the process of conducting
Discourse analysis Sub study 3 Depending on sub study 1 and 2 In sub study 1, which I am in the process of conducting, I am identifying where students from the real estate management programme at Malmö University have been employed and what kind of jobs they have been employed for. Sub study 2 is a discourse analysis. The empirical material is 30 annual reports from the following groups within the sector: (1) companies on the commercial market, (2) companies working with private housing and (3) public municipality owned housing companies (10 reports from each group). The aim is to investigate which images the different companies, and groups, are presenting sub study 3, which is a survey. The respondents of the survey are former students. In this study I will partly measure facts about their current situation but also their values and opinions. The final questions being asked in the survey will depend on my conclusions in study 1 and 2. ERES 2009

5 3. Theoretical frame “Organizational scholarship has been, primarly,
a literature written by men, for men and about men: how to gain the cooperation of men to achieve organizational ends through rationality: how to man/age.” (Calás & Smircich 1996) Gender blind- organizational scholarship ERES 2009

6 3. Theoretical frame Doing-gender perspective-
(the term gender is used as socially constructed) Gender blind- organizational scholarship My theoretical standpoint and point of departure is the doing-gender perspective, that means that my research takes a social constructionist position and the term gender is used as socially constructed. The social constructionists position is concerned how masculinity and femininity is constructed and what effects this construction has on the social order. ERES 2009

8 3. Theoretical frame Gender is something that is done and it varies in time and place. Ahl (2004) points out, that when gender and not sex, are discussed, it means that the study object goes beyond men and women. Gender blind- organizational scholarship My theoretical standpoint and point of departure is the doing-gender perspective, that means that my research takes a social constructionist position and the term gender is used as socially constructed. The social constructionists position is concerned how masculinity and femininity is constructed and what effects this construction has on the social order. I think of gender as independent of a persons biological sex but will refer to what is regarded as masculine or feminine. Gender is something that is done and it varies in time and place. Ahl (2004) points out that when gender and not sex are discussed it means that the study object goes beyond men and women. The gender order is central in the organisational theory and the power relations between the sexes are important and is expressed through structures and symbols. This means according to Wahl(2001) that there will be a gender order in every organisations that is changeable. ERES 2009

9 4. Contribution of my research
Theoretical Empirical Practical Theoretical This is dependent on my research and to early do discuss at this stage. Although I believe maybe that one contribution will point out that the real estate in academic research so far has overlooked the gender issue. Empirical My contribution will be empirical studies within the real estate industry, so far I have found a lack of empirical studies with gender issues in the real estate industry. Practical To attract young men and women to the industry will probably be a challenge, I hope that the study will contribute to show the gender structure and the tendency of masculine and feminine gendered jobs.
